Port Washington Information

Port Washington Public Library

The Port Washington Public Library, which celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 1992, offers a spectacular reading room with views of lower Main Street and Manhasset Bay, an art gallery, concerts and a wide variety of other cultural programs, a children’s area, and, of course, a fine selection of books, tapes and other media.

Port Washington School District

The Port Washington Union Free School District is comprised of five elementary schools, one middle school and one high school.  They are listed below as well as the Vincent Smith School and St. Peter of Alcantara School, both of which are private schools.

Railroad Station Parking

Parking at any of five commuter parking lots at or within walking distance of Port Washington railroad station requires a special permit sticker affixed to the rear bumper of your car. Parking stickers may be obtained from the Town parking office located in a converted house adjoining the parking lot on Vanderventer Avenue. Proof of residency is required, namely copies of license and registration (indicating a Port Washington address) and two utility bills.

The parking charge is currently $1.00 per day. Lottery-style rub-off cards are hung facing forward from the rear view mirror. (Just don’t forget to mark the correct date!)

These cards are sold in books of ten at the parking office and at some nearby stores. A monthly pass, available for $20.00, can be economical for some months if you never miss a day. During non-holiday periods most of the year, many of the commuter parking lots are full well before 8:00 AM. Late risers be forewarned!

There are few free parking alternatives to the commuter lots. Most non-metered street parking within reasonable walking distance of the station is limited to three hours or less, and the parking enforcement officers are quite diligent about marking tires and returning to issue tickets. There are some legal all-day spots in residential areas within a ten minute walk from the station, but finding one available is often difficult.

Taxi Service

Port Washington is fortunate to have an efficient radio taxi service. Cabs are usually available for a ride to the station or other locations around the community within fifteen minutes or less. Fares are determined by zone and are government regulated. Airport pick-up and drop-off service is also available.

Access to Parks & Facilities

Port Washington boasts a wide range of cultural and leisure-time facilities available to residents of the Town or County.

The Port Washington Public Library has been serving the community since 1892 when it was housed in a local family's front parlor. Today, the library is a modern service-oriented institution - named by a national consortium of professional librarians as one of the 50 best in the nation.

Among the public facilities for sporting activities available in Port Washington are the Manorhaven Beach Park, which

includes a large swimming pool, tennis courts and boat ramp, and boat moorings at the Town Dock on lower Main Street. Both facilities are operated by the Town of North Hempstead. The Town also operates North Hempstead Beach Park, which includes a variety of sports facilities, on the Hempstead Harbor side the peninsula. Nearby, Nassau County maintains Hempstead Harbor Beach Park. Use of the various facilities may require an appropriate I.D. card or car sticker and payment of seasonal fees.

Sands Point Preserve

The Sands Point Preserve on Middle Neck Road is operated by Nassau County. Its mission is to provide nature walks and other programs for nature study. The former mansion of Harry Frank Guggenheim, Falaise, is also located on the grounds, perched dramatically on the cliffs overlooking the Long Island Sound. Tours of the house, which has been preserved with all original furnishings intact, are available for a fee. Hempstead House, an older mansion on the grounds of the Preserve, had been the site of many SPCA parties in pre-Village Club days. While entry into the Preserve is free, a small parking charge may be collected.
